July 13, 2018 – Hvar & Palmizana

Today was a “free” day.  No real plans.  We had a few friends who had past through Hvar recently and polled them to see what we ought to do.  We’d done some winetasting in Korcula, but had also heard good things about the wines in Hvar.  We’d been to a couple of great beach clubs, but heard great things about the small island of Palmizana, just off of Hvar.  The message we heard, loud and clear, from our friends:  Go to Laganini Beach Club in Palmizana…..so we did!

Water taxis leave from the Hvar harbor regularly and take you out the “port” in Palmizana.  The ride is 30-60 minutes depending on boat and weather.  Once you in Palmizana, the walk over the hill to Laganini is only about 10 minutes.  All we can say about Laganini is “wow”.  Beautiful setting in a secluded bay, dotted with sailboats and small yachts.  Zodiac boats putter in an out from the larger boats and other parts of the island to the small, white dock in front of the restaurant/club.  Most of the “club” section is on the water or up a few steps into the hillside – day beds, lounge chairs, bean bags and small tables.  The restaurant is located on a level further up the hill, but the food from the restaurant is available at the club.  And the bean bags had no minimum spend….so our choice was obvious. [Travel Tip:  we’d made a 3:30pm lunch reservation at the restaurant, to at least get our name on the list.  We showed up closed to noon and asked what the other options were (e.g. bean bag chairs).  Having the original reservations helped us “rebook” the bean bags for sure.]

Today is also a day of celebration, as we found out that “Four Star Life” co-founder, Patricia, was nominated for her second consecutive Emmy Award.  Fingers crossed for this year!  We had the best time – swimming in the bay, sipping champagne (a little celebratory splurge), dining on sushi and grilled tuna and enjoying the music of the resident DJ.  Just an amazing experience.  Great staff too.  Definitely worth a day if you are in the Hvar region.

Around 5:00pm we headed back to Hvar and got ready for the evening.  Our favorite restaurant from our last trip to Croatia (in 2015) was Dalmatino in Hvar.  They are known for their black gnocchi with truffles and their steak (also with truffles).  We had both and immediately hit the wall.  Between the sun, the food, the drinks and the heavy dinner, it was definitely time to call it a day.  Croatia was great!  We will really miss it.
