How do you decide where to stay when you go on vacation? The number of “stars” that the hotel has is a good starting point, but there is a big range within each tier. Sites like Hotels.com and Trip Advisor do a decent job of outlining how users rate the hotel in different aspects, but there isn’t a consistent formula. For those who want to stay somewhere nice, but not break the bank (or break the bank once in a while to stay somewhere truly amazing), we are introducing the “Four Star Life Hotel Rating”.
Each hotel we stay at or visit is assigned a rating from 1-5 in 10 different categories, with a slight bump up for a place that’s got something unique:
- Location: Is it central to the action? Do you need to travel far to get to the top attractions, central markets and great restaurants?
- Landmarks & Views: Is near something iconic? Are there views of top attractions or of the city?
- Room Size: Bigger is usually better, but we take into account what the average size is for that city.
- Room Style: Is the room updated with new, modern finishes and/or classic stylings matching the mood and history of the hotel?
- Ambiance & Lobby: What’s the first impression, inside and out? Are you staring at the ceiling or just trying to get checked in?
- Amenities: Pool and spa, primarily. But also, do they have and/or do a good job with basics like business centers, gym, wifi and room service.
- Service: What’s the level of service and personalization? Are the staff just going about their business or are they bending over backwards for you?
- Bar Scene: There is no better place to kick off your night than at a great lobby/hotel bar. Lots of energy, great architecture, interesting people.
- Stars: How do other people and/or agencies rate this hotel? It might be tops on our list but only so-so for others, or the other way around.
- Price: Is the place overpriced? Fairly priced? A great deal?
- BONUS: A little nudge for something unique. (We’ll be sure to add it to the notes)
Based on all of these criteria, two “Rating” scores will be generated.
- General Rating: This is a rating that does not take price into account, only the quality of the first nine criteria. Higher is better, for sure, but sometimes the price can be quite high.
- Four Star Rating: Our motto is to get the “champagne life on a sparkling wine budget”, so this rating takes into account whether you are getting any bang for your buck!
For both “Ratings” the scale is the same:
- Less than 60 points: Not worth it. Not the Four Star Life. There are better options out there.
- 60 – 69 points: Good hotel. Maybe a few draw backs, but very serviceable.
- 70 – 79 points: Great hotel. Might not have everything, but worth visiting.
- 80 – 89 points: Exceptional hotel. Memorable and highly recommended.
- 90 points or higher: Four Star Life top pick! Don’t miss it!
All of our hotel recommendations will now have these two “Ratings” and associated scores. Link here to the overall list and details for each.
